APWiL Mentoring Program Seminar: Women’s Representation in Higher Education in the Pacific Rim

This first seminar, engaging the APWiL Mentoring Program second cohort participants, entitled Women’s Representation in Higher Education in the Pacific Rim will feature several contributors to the International Briefs for Higher Education Leaders. This seminar is held in partnership with the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) at Boston College.

  • Dr. Alma Maldonado-Maldonado, Researcher, Department of Educational Research at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV for its Spanish acronym), Mexico

The seminar will explore women’s representation and advancement in higher education leadership in the Pacific Rim. Participants will hear about research conducted by scholars in the region, learn about different perspectives and challenges, and will have the opportunity to network with peers of the APWiL Mentoring Program. Speakers will share both the commonalities and differences in barriers to women’s advancement in leadership as well as how their countries are addressing or are not addressing these barriers.

During the networking portion of the event, we will have breakout rooms for attendees to network with one another. Attendees will be able to select their own room. Rooms will be themed around potential interest areas, but specific questions to respond to will not be provided. Individuals in the room, along with the facilitator, will have the liberty to guide the conversation. Possible themes include:

Professor of Higher Education at the Faculty of Education Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia

Article: Malaysian Women in Higher Education Leadership: Promise Without Progress

Norzaini Azman is Professor of Higher Education at the Faculty of Education, Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia. She is a governance board member of University College of Yayasan Pahang (UCYP) and also an Associate Research Fellow at the National Higher Education Research Institute (IPPTN), Universiti Sains, Malaysia. She is currently serving her third term as Chair/President of the Malaysian Society for Research and Higher Education Policy Development (PenDaPaT). Her main research interests include higher education policy and governance, the academic profession, higher education and sustainability, and leadership in higher education.

Professor Amalia Di Iorio AM
Professor of Finance Associate Provost (International and Academic Partnerships), La Trobe University, Australia

Article: Breaking the Barriers for Women in Higher Education: An Australian Perspective

Dr Amalia Di Iorio AM is Associate Provost (International and Academic Partnerships) at La Trobe. She has presented Women in Leadership public forums drawing on her research and the experiences of her students in Melbourne, China, India, Indonesia and regional Victoria.

Dr Di Iorio was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in June 2021 recognising her significant service to tertiary education, to skills development and to women.

Dr Di Iorio is a Professor of Finance at La Trobe University. Her research has appeared in top international journals, and she has been a Chief Investigator of projects that have been awarded highly competitive Australian Research Council (ARC) grants, including a project in women’s financial decision-making.

Dr Di Iorio has an outstanding record as a teacher, having taught in Australia and throughout Asia. She has received nine teaching awards, including two national awards.

Linda Chelan Li is Professor of Political Science at the Department of Public Policy and director of Research Centre for Sustainable Hong Kong (CSHK), City University of Hong Kong. A specialist in Chinese politics and governance, Li stresses the role of collaboration as well as conflict in understanding politics and public policy. Her publications span the topics of intergovernmental relations, government reforms, public finance, cross-border relations and sustainable development. Some major publications are Centre and Provinces in China (Clarendon, 1998), The Rural Tax Reform in China (Routledge, 2012), Good Governance in Asia (ed., Routledge, 2015), Co-evolution of Hong Kong’s Professional Services and the Belt and Road Initiative (in Chinese, ed., City University of Hong Kong Press, 2019), and Facts and Analysis: Canvassing Covid-19 Responses (ed., City University of Hong Kong Press, 2021).

Alma Maldonado-Maldonado is a researcher at the Department of Educational Research at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV for its Spanish acronym). She was an assistant professor at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona. Her research interests are: Comparative higher education, Latin American higher education, higher education policies and the role of international organizations shaping higher education worldwide.

Article: Women and Equity in Higher Education: Eradicating Barriers in a Post-Pandemic World

Joanna Regulska, vice provost and dean of Global Affairs and professor of gender, sexuality and women’s studies at the University of California, Davis, has led large-scale programs that transform institutions, establish partnerships, and substantially improve global services, for over 30 years. In 2021, Regulska was named an inaugural member of the National Academy for International Education. A respected scholar, Regulska’s research concentrates on women’s political activism, grassroots mobilization, decentralization, democracy and democratization, with a focus on Europe and the Caucasus.

Ms. Carly O’Connell (American Council on Education (ACE) Representative)
Specialist, Programs and Global Initiatives, American Council on Education

Carly O’Connell is a program specialist at the American Council on Education (ACE), where she supports the Internationalization Laboratory program and coordinates communication efforts across the programs and global initiatives division. Prior to this role, O’Connell served in ACE’s public affairs division for nearly four years. Her international experience includes studying abroad in a Mandarin language immersion program at Beijing University and teaching English at Cuizhu Middle School in Changzhou, China. She holds a B.A. in Linguistics and Chinese Language and Culture from the College of William & Mary and is currently pursuing an M.A. in International Education and certificate in Assessment, Testing, and Measurement from the George Washington University.
