Asia-Pacific Women in Leadership (APWiL) Workshop 2014

Kyoto University hosted APRU’s Asia-Pacific Women in Leadership (APWiL) Special Workshop on 1 and 2 July at the Kyoto University Tokyo Office.

A total of 50 participants comprising faculty, researchers and administrators attended the 2-day workshop. Participants were welcomed by APWiL Program Chair and Executive Vice President, Dr Masako Egawa of the University of Tokyo. Professor Yasuko Takezawa of Kyoto University’s Institute for Research in Humanities gave an overview of the workshop proceedings and this was followed by a discussion on institutional strategies on advancing the participation of women in universities. The session was led by guest speaker, Professor Jeanette Takamura, Dean of Columbia University’s School of Social Work.

The second day of the workshop featured remarks from Kyoto University’s Vice-President for Gender Equality and Director of the Gender Equality Center for Women Researchers, Professor Kayo Inaba. H.E. Ms Kumiko Bando, Deputy Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology addressed the participants on current efforts to promote the participation of women in Japan’s economic and social development particularly in the education sector.

Other key activities at the workshop included interactive small group and general discussions on leadership strategies for women in academia – micro to macro level strategic actions and practices in the research environment, self-care, work and family life balance, among others. Participants of the workshop also drafted a proposal on improving the status of women in higher education in Japan (i.e. Shinagawa Proposal 2014).
