APRU Global Health Program Workshop 2014

The APRU Global Health Program’s 9th Annual Workshop was held in Taipei from September 24-27, 2014. It was a resounding success, with more than 240 participants from 18 countries and 17 disciplines. National Taiwan University (NTU) did a wonderful job of hosting and making everyone feel welcome. The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Alistair Woodward from the University of Auckland, who spoke regarding environmental health challenges in the Pacific Rim. Other Distinguished Speakers include: Dr. Hiroyasu Iso from the Osaka University; Dr. Jonathan Samet from the University of Southern California, Dr. Mauricio Hernandez-Avila who is the Director General of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) of Mexico and Tung-Liang Chiang from National Taiwan University.

Participants were able to listen to and interact with more than 60 international experts of global and public health from around the Pacific Rim. All workshops were held within the premises of the NTU College of Public Health which made it a good opportunity for NTU students to broaden their scope of knowledge and to get first hand experience from world-renowned global health experts.

This year, we hosted the first APRU Global Health Program Student Poster Contest. We received 25 excellent eligible posters from students from around the Pacific Rim. The posters were judged by our Steering Committee. Six winners were chosen (two in each category of 1st, 2nd and 3rd). The winners accepted their awards at the APRU GHP Workshop in Taipei. The winners were:

  1. First place: Chi-Wen Huang (from National Taiwan University) & Hsiao-wei Yu (from National Taiwan University)
  2. Second place: Chia-Wen Hsiao & Bing-Long Wang (from Asia University) & Yun-Yi Chen & Kuo-Piao Chung (from National Taiwan University)
  3. Third place: Munkh-Erdene Luvsan (from National Taiwan University) and Jessmaree Crisol (from Our Lady of Fatima University).

The conference included a tour through the NTU College of Public Health. A field trip to see some of the cultural sights of Taipei closed a very successful workshop with fruitful discussions and valuable outcomes to follow up for the APRU Global Health team.
