APRU Global Health Working Group Webinars: Teaching in Virtual Environments

The Teaching in Virtual Environments webinar series includes three interactive 90-minute sessions organized by the APRU Global Health Working Group on Education and Technology in collaboration with USC Institute on Inequalities in Global Health and University of Oregon. Participants will have the opportunity to develop and practice skills, as well as share experiences with other participants in virtual breakout sessions and full group discussions. Join us for this opportunity to learn from our network as we prepare for the fall of online and remote instruction.


First Session: Creative Ideas for Online and Remote Assessment

With remote and online teaching we cannot have the same safe guards for our course exams.  In this session we will hear from APRU teaching experts (Elly Vandegrift, University of Oregon and Victor Hoe, University of Malaya) with some ideas for creating meaningful assessments of student learning that work well in online environments.

Second Session: Authentic Experiential Education

Many of our educational program are enriched or dependent on students having experiential education. How do we create those types of learning experiences in remote or virtual settings?  In this session, APRU teaching experts (Elly Vandegrift, University of Oregon and Vivian WY Lee, Chinese University of Hong Kong) will share some of the innovative ways their institutions have developed experiential education for online environments.

Final Session: Building Community in Remote Classrooms

Creating a sense of community in our remote classrooms where students and faculty have the same sense of purpose and connection can feel very different in remote teaching in in our physical classrooms.  In this session we will explore some suggestions for building connection with students in online and remote environments with two APRU member teaching experts (Elly Vandegrift, University of Oregon and César Alberto Lucio Ramírez, Tecnológico de Monterrey).  Using the breakout rooms, we will then have time for discussion in small groups and return to the large room for the full group discussion.

Eleanor “Elly” Vandegrift
Program Director, University of Oregon

Eleanor “Elly” Vandegrift is the program director for Global Science Education Initiatives in the Division of Global Engagement at the University of Oregon. Trained as an ecologist, Elly has taught university-level life sciences courses, led STEM education professional development programs, and supported curricular and pedagogical reform to make science interesting, engaging, and relevant to improve students learning experiences. She has facilitated STEM education and communication workshops with US and global partners. As recognition of her teaching excellence, Elly has received four university and national pedagogy awards. She is the author of several articles about STEM education reform and professional development.

Dr Victor Hoe
Professor, University of Malaya

Dr Victor Hoe is a Professor of Occupational and Public Health. He heads the Academic Section in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine in the University of Malaya and the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Unit in University Malaya Medical Centre. His passion is in the use of technology to enhance and simplify work. He has been experimenting in various forms of online teaching and assessment since 2012.
He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Occupational Health and Safety from Monash University in Melbourne Australia. He also has the Master of Public Health, Master of Public Health (Occupational Health) and Master of Engineering (Safety, Health and Environment) from the University of Malaya, and the Master of Occupational Safety and Health from the University of Turin and the International Labour Organization – International Training Centre in Turin, Italy. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia and Fellow of the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia.

Prof Wing Yan Vivian Lee
Chinese University of Hong Kong

Prof Wing Yan Vivian Lee joined the Center for Learning Enhancement And Research at the Chinese University of Hong Kong since July 2019. She received her Bachelor of Sciences in Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles and her Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Southern California. She is the senior fellow of the United Kingdom Higher Education Academy. Prof. Lee is a clinician-scientist utilizing innovative technology and education to improve patient care. She is a dedicated teacher and researcher who has received numerous teaching and research awards. She has a h-index of 29 with 131 full and 224 abstracts publications.

Dr César Alberto Lucio Ramírez
Tecnológico de Monterrey

Dr César Alberto Lucio Ramírez is a pediatrician and full-time pediatrics and Global Health professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey. Dr. Lucio is a FAIMER fellow and has a Post-Graduate certificate in Health Professions Education by Keele University in the UK. He has presented conferences and research projects in national and international settings like the Association for Medical Education in Europe, Reimagine Education, among others. He enjoys being a TEDx speaker with his TEDx Talk “Global Health: Personal attitude” and being part of local media counseling groups for TV and printed press. His expertise revolves around learning communities, clinical skills assessment, online education, competency-based education, faculty development and curriculum design. In 2019 he received the Teaching Excellence Award by the global consortium Universitas 21. He also forms part of the IFOM committee for the National Board of Medical Examiners.
