APRU Global Health Program Conference 2016

The 10th annual APRU Global Health conference was hosted by the UNSW Australia in Sydney from Sept 28 – Oct 1, 2016.

Close to 200 senior researchers, practitioners, early career researchers and students representing 17 economies and 10 different disciplines participated in the conference.

Participants and delegates were welcomed by Professor Ian Jacobs, UNSW Australia’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr Christopher Tremewan, APRU Secretary General, Professor Jonathan Samet, APRU Global Health Program Chair and Professor Rodney Philips, Dean of UNSW Medicine.

There were keynote speeches by Professor Charles Gilks, Head of the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland and Dr Take Naseri, the Director-General of the Ministry of Health, Samoa. They spoke about infectious diseases in the Pacific Rim and the health service reform in Samoa respectively. The conference this year also featured invited speakers from Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Ghana, and the United States.

The conference started with a special half-day workshop on workplace wellness and an afternoon reception in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Health Management Program at UNSW.

Over the next two days, delegates were able to attend 10 concurrent panel sessions as well as two poster sessions on topics such as non-communicable diseases, global health governance, maternal and child health, and ageing.

 

 

Delegates of the 10th APRU Global Health Conference

The finals of the inaugural APRU Global Health Virtual Case Competition were held as part of the conference whereby the three finalist videos were screened live. A winner was voted by the delegates at the meeting.

The winning student team from Our Lady of Fatima University, received a US$500 prize. As part of the awards ceremony, the six winners of the APRU Global Health Student Poster Contest were also presented with their prizes.

A highlight of the workshop was the welcome dinner and reception, which featured a performance by indigenous dancers and the instrument, the didgeridoo. On the final day, a group of participants went on a delightful optional excursion – a cruise along the Sydney harbour.

UNSW Australia’s warm hospitality won the appreciation of the APRU delegates.
