Founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has five campuses in three cities, namely Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Shenzhen and 10 affiliated hospitals. SYSU is located in the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. With its distinctive geographical advantages, robust economic strength, and a high concentration of the key factors of innovation, the Greater Bay Area aims to build itself into a vibrant world-class city cluster and a globally influential international innovation and technology hub. SYSU is equipped with a global outlook and is dedicated to becoming an institution that is “comprehensive, innovative, and open”. It ranks 89th worldwide and 7th on mainland China in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2021.
SYSU’s academic excellence spans wide including 71 schools and departments in Liberal Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture and Arts. Apart from its traditional strength in Philosophy, History and Chinese within the nation, many academic disciplines topped among universities in China while subjects like Tourism and Leisure Management, Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Computer Science, Materials Science, Business Management stand out in various subjects ranking worldwide.
At Sun Yat-sen University, scientific research is orientated towards academic frontiers, national strategic needs as well as demands from the regional economic and social development and people’s health. SYSU has encouraged research and innovation in all disciplines through the construction of Large Projects, Large Platforms and Large Teams. The University is making remarkable progress in building large platforms and research infrastructure cluster such as Tianqin Center for gravitational wave detection, Sun Yat-sen University oceanographic research and training vessel, the largest university-owned vessel in China, the National Super Computing Center in Guangzhou, one of the world’s super-computing centres with the largest number of users, the widest range of applications and the highest system utilisation.
As a leader in Medicine, SYSU takes full advantage of its network of 10 affiliated hospitals to offer one of the first-class clinical services for the people. According to the latest ranking, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, SYSU tops Asia. SYSU’s Cancer Prevention and Control Center ranks second in China and the First Affiliated Hospital is among the top five of the Hospitals on the mainland.
SYSU’s rapid development is largely propelled by its active international exchanges and cooperation. As of now, SYSU has more than 240 partners in over 40 countries and areas around the world, represented by SYSU’s Lehn Institute of Functional Materials collaborating with ETH Zurich, Karlsruhe Institute Technology and University of Strasbourg, and the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering (IFCEN), jointly established and operated with the Alliance for Civil Nuclear Engineering Education in France (FINUCI), led by National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (INPG) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and other french engineering institutions as group members.
Apart from bilateral relationships with international partners, SYSU also emphasises on network partnerships with university alliances and cooperation with international organisations. Aside from their engagement in APRU, SYSU is also an active player in university alliances such as the University Sino-Australia Research Alliance and the University Consortium of 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU is also a member of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE). SYSU has two UNESCO Chairs and has established a cooperation centre with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide more solutions to control mosquito-borne infectious diseases.
In 2016, SYSU joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Macau to establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance. The Alliance currently has 41 member institutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and has developed 37 discipline Sub-Alliances under its general structure. SYSU is currently the Chair Institution of the Alliance Council.
By joining the APRU, Sun Yat-sen University aims to further promote and contribute to educational and scientific research cooperation among member universities, notably in areas of International Community Development, including Population Aging, Global Health System, Sustainable Development, Artificial Intelligence and the future of work. SYSU aspires to contribute its research strengths to help to address common issues and challenges facing humankind through collaborative effort.
