YESPORTS x APRU: Esports Career Webinar Series

Yesports, in partnership with APRU, is convening Esports leaders from related industries, higher education, legal institutions, regulation, and Esports associations to share their experiences and challenges in understanding and participating in the Esports ecosystem. These discussions will empower participants to make the most informed decision about participating in Esports and assist in exploring their career opportunities for the future.

With an average retirement age of 25 for professional gamers, a career in Esports has been long stigmatized. Now with much more robust career offerings throughout the entire ecosystem, players can see beyond the gamer role as viable career pathway.  With the typical age group of these aspirational players falling into the age band of college-bound students, administrators and university leaders must also consider providing safeguards and protections for their students.

The series aims to offer a platform for understanding and sharing best practice for education institutions and gamers to discuss:

  • Contracts for gamers (from underage students to adults)
  • Best practices for gamers to join in tournaments abroad
  • Protections for working in the industry globally: working with sponsors, media, team managers, coaches etc.
  • Career exploration

Session 1: Career Plan For Young Gamers

“Professional gamer” is not the only job in the Esports industry, with a growing industry and grassroots culture, career opportunities are endless. How do you find your niche and cultivate your talents? What are the initial steps to building your career, making the right connections, and develop a plan that can yield genuine opportunities for the long-run? Session 2: Esports Player Contracts: Common Clauses And Potential Legal Issues

Player Contracts in Esports is for looking after the rights of terms and players, and they help guarantee specifically contractual stability. It is an important matter to understand the contractual relationship between Esports teams and players and how these contracts can take shape and be implemented.

Baro Hyun (Session 1 Speaker)
Director, Digital Content Advisory, TMT, KPMG Consulting Japan

Dr. Hyun is the founder of an unprecedented Esports advisory practice at KPMG Consulting, Japan. Formerly an aerospace/automotive engineer (PhD in Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan ‘11), Hyun’s experience growing up in South Korea, the birthplace of esports business, has been central to his success with the advisory business, which has a pool of major clients including the Japanese government. Now he is the sector lead of the Media and Gaming industry at KPMG Consulting.

Hyun has been teaching Esports business at Keio University since 2018, and he has frequently appeared in major media outlets such as The Nikkei, the world’s largest financial newspaper. He was the editorial supervisor for the acclaimed book A Primer on Esports Business (まる わかり!eスポーツ・ビジネス), published by Nikkei Mook, and a serial contributor for major Japanese business media outlets such as The Nikkei, Nikkei Business Daily, and Diamond Online. He has been invited to speak on international esports/gaming business by The Nikkei, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Japan Esports Union, The Legal 500, MIT Horizon, and CBS Radio. He has also authored an Amazon- bestselling book entitled Demystifying Esports: A Personal Guide to the History and Future of Competitive Gaming.

Joe Jacko (Session 1 Speaker)
League of Legends Head Coach, University of Southern California

Joe Jacko is the League of Legends Head Coach at the University of Southern California as well as the Head Esports Coach at Westridge School for Girls. Previously, he spent 2 years playing League of Legends at the collegiate level and collectively won over $20,000 in esports scholarships with his team at Virginia Tech. He was previously ranked Challenger (Top 300 or ~Top .02%) within League of Legends (LoL) and coached the Varsity LoL Team at the University of Southern California to their first-ever appearance within the ESPN Esports Top 25 College League of Legends Poll in 2020.

Mat is a pioneer and leading lawyer and consultant in the fast-growing esports sector, acting for clients with interests in leagues and teams in Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia. As a dedicated Sports lawyer, Mat has acted for National Sporting Organisations, State Sporting Organisations, sponsors, broadcasters, and leagues and event operators. In the media and entertainment industries, Mat has advised film producers, artists, authors, creatives, podcasters, streamers, and tech start-ups.

Mat is admitted in the Supreme Court of NSW and is on the roll of the High Court of Australia. He regularly speaks to the media on sports, esports, and entertainment topics and is also an active member of the US-based Sports Lawyers Association (SLA) as well as the Australia and New Zealand Sports Law Association (ANZSLA). Mat teaches as a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne Law School and as a casual academic at the University of Victoria in Melbourne and teaches the Sport Integrity & Ethics course.

Kamilla Sumagui is a team owner of The Refuge Esports and formerly PH Bandits. She was also the managing director of the United Clan Leaders Alliance Philippines, an esports organization that brings together PUBG Mobile Clan Leaders and their teams, event managers, and streamers, at the same time the community manager for PUBG Mobile Esports in the Philippines.
