APRU Welcomes The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Hong Kong, May 8, 2018 — We are delighted to announce that The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has joined the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).

We welcome Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President, and his colleagues to our Association and look forward to a valuable and productive partnership.

CUHK joining APRU was followed by a visit by APRU Secretary General Christopher Tremewan, APRU Director of Policy and Programs Christina Schönleber, in October last year.

“APRU is privileged to count CUHK among the leading research universities which comprise our members,” said Tremewan.

“We welcome the strength that CUHK will bring to this task through the leadership and insights of President Tuan, a distinguished scientist and intellectual leader,” he added.

CUHK boasts a great number of distinguished scholars and researchers who are highly regarded authorities in various specialties, including four Nobel Laureates.

CUHK has long been promoting interdisciplinary research excellence on a local, national and international scale and has identified four research priorities, namely China Studies, Translational Biomedicine, Information and Automation Technology, and Environment and Sustainability.

The university is a world leader in non-invasive prenatal testing theory and method, genomic studies on plants for sustainable agriculture and food security, and network coding theory that revolutionized data transmission and network applications.

Over the years, CUHK has established and maintained partnerships with eminent institutions from around the world, with a view to strengthening its research capacity, education for students, and visibility and impact around the world.

“We are especially looking forward to engaging further with CUHK on the APRU Global Health Program, which aims to harness research of Asia-Pacific universities to address emerging public health threats, aging and chronic diseases, infectious diseases and health security issues,” Tremewan said.

“It will be a real privilege for us to work together with the CUHK Centre for Global Health, an outstanding platform which links a diverse range of local and international stakeholders to connect, inspire and act on global health and equity issues,” he added.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan has been installed as CUHK’s 8th Vice-Chancellor and President on April 17, 2018.

APRU extends fraternal greetings and all good wishes for his future guidance of CUHK on his assumption of the leadership of such a distinguished institution.
