Founded in 1907, the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is the flagship campus of the University of Hawai’i System. More than 20,400 students are enrolled in UH Mānoa courses. UH Mānoa’s special distinction is found in its Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific orientation and unique location at the hub of the Pacific Rim. It is home to the Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the largest school of indigenous knowledge in the United States and the only one located in a research university. The Native Hawaiian and Indigenous Health specialization within the Master of Public Health program is the first such program in the world focused exclusively on indigenous health.  UH Mānoa’s School of Pacific and Asian Studies hosts eight area centers focused on Asia and the Pacific, and UH Mānoa offers instruction in more Asian-Pacific languages than any other U.S. institution of higher learning.

Classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research University with “very high” research activity, with extramural funding averaging $333 million per year over the last five years, UH Mānoa is among the top 30 public research universities in the United States for federal research funding in engineering and science (National Science Foundation) and 51st overall. UH Mānoa is a land-, sea-, and space-grant university.  UH Mānoa excels in research focused in tropical agriculture, tropical medicine, oceanography, astronomy, volcanology, evolutionary biology, comparative philosophy, education, languages, urban planning, cultural studies in the Pacific/Oceania, performing arts, and international business.
