A campus of the world-renowned University of California system for more than five decades, UC Santa Barbara is one of 62 research-intensive institutions elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities. Its 1,084-member faculty includes five Nobel Prize winners (all awarded since 1998), the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize winner, a Fields Medalist, numerous Guggenheim and Fulbright fellows, and scores of elected members or fellows of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Teaching and research go hand in hand at UC Santa Barbara, and students are full participants in an educational journey of discovery that stimulates independent thought, critical reasoning, and creativity. The campus enrolls some 20,000 students, about 3,000 of them at the graduate level, and offers more than 200 majors, degrees, and credentials through its five schools and Graduate Division. The number of freshman applicants for Fall 2012 was 55,249.
