Sun Yat-sen University, founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, has 5 campuses in the 3 cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, and 10 affiliated hospitals. We are located in the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. At Sun Yat-sen University, scientific research is orientated towards the academic frontiers, the national strategic needs, the demands from the regional economic and social development and people’s health. And SYSU has encouraged research and innovation in all disciplines through the construction of large projects, large platforms and large teams. The University is making great progress in building large platforms and research infrastructure cluster such as Tianqin Center for gravitational wave detection, Sun Yat-sen University oceanographic research and training vessel, the largest university-owned vessel in China, the National Super Computing Center in Guangzhou, one of the world’s super-computing centers with the largest number of users, the widest range of applications and the highest system utilization.
As we are a leader in Medicine, SYSU takes fully advantage of its network of 10 affiliated hospitals to offer one of the first-class clinical services for the people. According to the latest ranking, Zhongshan Ophthalmic center, SYSU tops in Asia, The Cancer Prevention and Control Center, SYSU ranks second in China and the First Affiliated Hospital is among the top 5 of the Hospitals in Chinese mainland.
SYSU’s rapid development is greatly propelled by active international exchanges and cooperation. Up till now, we have more than 240 partners in over 40 countries and areas around the world, represented by SYSU’s The Lehn Institute of Functional Materials collaborating with ETH Zurich, Karlsruhe Institute Technology, the University of Strasbourg and the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering (IFCEN), jointly established and operated with the alliance for civil nuclear engineering education in France (FINUCI), led by National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (INPG) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and other French engineering institutions as group members
Apart from bilateral relationships with our international partners, we are also emphasizing network partnerships with university alliances and cooperation with international organizations. Aside from our engagement in APRU, SYSU is also an active player in the University Sino-Australia Research Alliance, and the University Consortium of 21st Century Maritime Silk Road etc. The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU is also a member of AMEE, the Association for Medical Education in Europe. SYSU has two UNESCO Chairs and has established a cooperation center with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide more solutions to control mosquito-borne infectious diseases.
In 2016, SYSU, together with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Macao, formed the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance. The Alliance now has 41 member institutions in the Guangdong- Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and has developed 37 discipline sub-alliances under its general structure. SYSU is currently the chair institution of the alliance council.
